After school today me and 2 friends from my class went down to the central part of Skellefteå to eat something, buy booze for one of us and I should buy de Blob for the Nintendo Wii. I handed in 2 of my old games, Table Tennis and Ninty Nine Nights and I got 190 kr for them which I used to get de Blob a bit cheaper.
When I reached my apartment I sat down infront of the tv and started up my Wii which have been unused since the summer when I was down in Eskilstuna. Put in the disc for de Blob and started it, watched a colourfull intro that explained that the evil corporation INKT have invaded Croma City and drawn out all colour of it but there is a small resistence force that needs a hero to do their dirty work and that is where Blob comes in.
The game starts of at a beach where there use to be a resort but it’s now all gray and dull so your first mission is to put some colour to it and well that’s pretty much what the whole game is about, put colour on areas and see them become inhabitable by the colourfull people of Croma City.
You could say that de Blob is a kind of platform game since you have to collect stuff, avoid the dark liquid and jump on some heads to kill enemies. You controll de Blob with the stick on the nunchuch and to jump you pull your wii mote down, you lock on enemies with the Z button and to kill them you press Z and pull the mote down too jump too them and land on them.
The game is divided into several maps with their own theme, Up/Downtown, the Dam, the Resort and so on and each of these have their own big goal, but then there is a lot of quests that you can to do earn more points and time. Yes the game is based on time but I haven’t had any problem with too little time on any of the maps, on some quests there could sometimes be a bit short of time but it’s not a stress factor as time can be in some games.
After I came home today I have been playing de Blob for 4 hours maybe and I like it, they have taken the wii controller and used it to something that it should be used to and not added a lot of extra stuff just because they have the wii mote which is something many developers do. Its like ”Oh, we have a Wii mote, lets put in all these extra featers that the player will use once in the game and that doesn’t add anything extra to the game more then some frustration” but Bluetongue have sidestepped past that and have all the controllers they need but nothing else. The PC version was the same, you controlled it only with the mouse, mouse movements to steer de Blob, left click to jump and right click to get a map which was all that the game required to be controlled.
de Blob is a happy game, it is nice to see the city grow with colour when you play and what starts of as a grey area is after ten minutes a colourful palette with people out on the streets dancing. Thats it for this days blog, tomorrow it is tacksittning in Luleå for the phösare, I’m driving one of the cars that are going there, hopefully it will be a pleasent evening with lots of laughter and such. I’ll have to stay sober but it will be fun anyway.
Night.
