Gamers night

februari 22, 2009 · 1 kommentar

Last night there was a gamers night at my place with games and movies. Only two people showed up but we had a nice time anyway. I showed then Noby Noby Boy, Flower and Killzone2, we watched King of Kong and we played some racing games.

The playlist during the evening:

  • Lego Indiana Jones
  • Flower
  • Noby Noby Boy
  • Killzone 2 demo
  • Project Gotham Racing 4
  • Burnout Paradise demo
  • NHL Arcade 3vs3 demo

I think that was all of them, NHL Arcade was kinda fun, really simple controls and easy core gameplay. PGR4 is a lot of fun in multiplayer, was a long time since I played it but it is a nice racing game, we downloaded the Burnout Paradise demo and I got really excited about racing games and started to watch which one to buy or if there are any new ones coming out. But there have been a lot of fuzz about Burnout Paradise lately which makes me a bit interesting in it. Many say its a great racing game and demo is rather limited but kinda fun so it might be a buy on that title. We’ll see where I end up doing my game design thesis, it feels kinda dumb to buy a lot of games and then not have the time to finish them before moving away for two months.

Today I spent infront of two computerscreens doing what I should have done a long time since which is working on my specialisation project. I created flash presentations on all five of my remaining concepts with animations explaining the gameplay or core gameplay. Rather fun actually as always.

That’s it for today, laters

A lots of games #1

februari 21, 2009 · Kommentera

I’ve played a lot of games since last time but that’s what happens when I’m not blogging as much as before. Last week, I bought Flower and I sold Lord of the Ring Conquest, RE4 Wii Edition and Zack & Wiki to the local Game store where I now have a lot of credits to buy up now.

Flower isa magnificent game, a couple of hours long but really wonderful. You controll the wind, blowing around a leaf from a flower and your job is to awaken all the flowers on the level, or atleast for th first couple of levels but I won’t spoil anything here. But it is a really good game and a game of the kind that I want to make in the future. It is something new, it is relaxing and you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. It only costs 70SEK which isn’t so much for a game but it might not be a game for everybody.

Last weekend I had a dry time since I had finished most of my games on my Xbox 360 and I was really in the mood for some Star Wars so me and Lisa played some Lego Star Wars, quite fun but I wanted something deeper, more depth and a more serious game. What not to like with Biowares own ”Star Wars universe” in Mass Effect. Fired it up, created a new character who is into magic and started to play. Mass Effect is still as good as last time I played it, which is ”GotY 2007″ good. I only played for 5 hours maybe but we’ll see if I will finish it this time around, I have other games and things to to.

For some of the credits I have on Game I bought Mirror’s Edge from Dice. A game that I have had high hopes on but the first couple levels was stressful, muddled. Never knowing where to go even with runners vision on. But after some time and getting used to the game its starts to get better. Dice have created a map pack with time trail levels which was an instant buy before I bought the game but now I’m not sure.  It’s 800MS points which in Swedish currency is 70-80 SEK which I don’t think it’s forth at the moment since I might sell it when I’m done with it.

This Thursday Noby Noby boy was released on PSN for 35 SEK. A really crazy game that is about eating stuff, growing your ”man/worm” and making it so long as possible. But the game have no real goal. You can report your lenght to Sun and Girl grows longer then. It’s a really strange game but fun to see something completely out of the ordinary on the PSN and only proves my point of my Specialisation Project; downloadable games can be used to create new out of the ordinary stuff.

I downloaded the Afro Samurai demo today from the US PSN and I really like the graphical style in that game. The gameplay might not be what I prefer but it seems to be a solid game atleast. Never watched Afro Samurai but it looks like an interesting concept.

In the future or I’ve already started with it actually, I plan to play games with a critical eye; taking notes on good and bad design and gameplay stuff. I hope it will help me be a better game designer because if I see that something in a game really is annoying, I know that the day I’m developing a similar game.

Tonight it will be a game/movie evening at my appartment for my friends, I still don’t know how many that will show up but hopefully a couple of people. We will play some games, watch a movie or two and talk games. Until then I’m gonna clean the appartment, play some games and probably do some schoolwork. This week I’ve been a bit lazy but I have still done what I should but maybe not so much more.

Future games I’m looking forward to is the new Kotor MMORPG, a Star Wars MMO game that takes place 40 000 years before the movies and is developed by Bioware and contiunes on their old Knights of the Old republic franchise. It looks a bit cartoony, not as much as World of Warcraft but they haven’t gone for ultra realism which I think is good. I really looking forward to it even thou I know what a time consumer MMO’s are. A game that I would have liked, or well I’ve only seen picture on it but there have been no real info about it is the now cancelled Halo MMO. It used a similar style as the Kotor MMO but was canned.

For the Nintendo Wii, Deadly Creatures was released last week, I think it looks good and good be a sleeper hit like the Blob, I was really close to buy it but didn’t in the last second. You play as a scorpion or a tarantula and solving puzzles, killing other creatures and the normal stuff. Might get it in the future since it looks quite good even thou Eurogamer gave it a 4/10. Another Wii game is Mad World, a black and white action game from Platinum Games. It looks quite good but might not be my first hand choise but it sure looks like an interesting title.

That’s it for today, gotta clean the appartment now so smell ya in a week probably.

Early Valentines Day and jawdropping stuff

februari 6, 2009 · Kommentera

I just played the Killzone 2 demo on my PS3 and I’m usually not that impresed with high polygon counts, but this game was jaw dropping seriously. Best looking game on console easily but it might get boring with all the grey and brown textures thruout the whole game. But the demo was really nice, I just got a little excite about it and might end up buying it later on. I also downloaded the latest FF7AC trailer from the japanese PSN and even that one was jaw dropping, they have made a good job piffing it up to high resolution and I can see why it have taken so long time for them. An instant buy even though I have the dvd version at home.

Me and Lisa celebrated Valentines day yesterday and I had bought her the first season of Ugly Betty and she got me Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga which was a nice thing since we have finished Lego Indiana Jones and both enjoyed it so now we have another game to play thru together. We also watched Madagascar 2 which was a funny movie I think.

We have soon lived together for 3 weeks I think and we have started to get stuff where they are supposed to be, we moved my computer table to the living room since we’re getting a new bed next week and now I have fixed so I can watch movies on the telly from my PC and with sound, have had problems with the sound since my stereo broke but now we have Lisas stereo so now I put it up again.

I’m not blogging that much on this blog anymore but I’m writing even more on my project blog over at lgdsp.wordpress.com where you all can follow my progress with the project.

See you all there.
