Dreams of Peru

It is now the last week of school pretty much, next Tuesday I’m going to present my thesis in front o a bunch of people and after that it’s over, my two years in school to become a Game Designer. I’m one week away from being an educated game designer on paper.

I have spent this week with fixing the last pieces on my thesis but also to read and look at pictures at a dream I have had for a long time. The dream is to visit Machu Picchu in Peru and last Sunday I found a traveling agent who had a 14 day long trip to Peru where you should walk the Inca trail up to Machu Picchu but you would also visit another old Inca place which haven’t been commercialized yet which means that there is a lot less people there. The name of this other place is Choquequirao and is only available by foot; it’s a two day trekking trip to get there and two more days to get back. I want to go so much; I really like everything that has to do with South- and Central American history with Inca’s and Maya’s. I spent the whole morning reading about the Inca trail and later I ordered a book that Hiram Bingham has written who discovered Machu Picchu around 1911, the book is about the discovery and I’m looking forward to read it.

History is something that always has interested me, if there is a documentary on the television about some findings in Israel or the Egyptian pyramids I usually end up watching it as I find most stuff fascinating. I think it is impressive that people find stuff that has been hidden for 100’s of years like pieces of jewellery or a tomb. It isn’t South and Central America history that interest me and I would like to see a game sometime where you can plan your own expedition in hope to find a lost city and making it the goal, not defeat an enemy and especially not putting in a third part that usually is abnormal as in Uncharted. No, it should be about exploring the jungle, take in the views and feel the atmosphere, maybe you meet a native tribe that you ask for help or just spend a night at. When you finally find what you have been looking for you should get a wow feeling and get a dumb smile on your face.

The problem with such a game is that people want a goal, there should be things to shoot and it should be free roaming but they then complain about the world being too big and that it is hard to find stuff and to know where you should go. Maybe I should write all this down in my idea folder as it evolves more and more into a game synopsis. I know one thing for sure and that is that the gaming world /community aren’t ready for such a game yet. They still has to shoot down a lot more stuff before it would sell.

I’m also thinking of getting a new hobby or interest, trekking. Trekking is walking with a fancier word, but it is not a word to use when walking down town, it is used when walking great distances in the nature. I think that if I am going to be able to walk the Inca trail I have to train and trekking seems nice, see the nature and get some fresh air. Tomorrow me and Lisa will try a walking route we found up on the mountain yesterday and hopefully it’s nice and not too long because then I will miss my appointment at the barber. But yeah, trekking could be something for me and it would be nice to “fjällvandra” /walk in the mountains in Sälen.

Projekt

Vi har nu påbörjat våra inriktigningsprojekt och ioch med det så har jag startat en ny blogg som ni finner här. Där kommer jag uppdatera ett par gånger i veckan om vad som händer med mitt projekt, vad jag har gjort och vad som är kvar typ. Så om ni är intresserade av vad jag håller på med så håll ett öga på den bloggen. Det ska väll påpekas att den bloggen kommer endast att användas till inriktningsprojektet och den här bloggen kommer fortfarande uppdateras ibland.

Idag har jag fått en hel del gjort annars, jag var förbi möbelbutiken i stan och betalade av min nya säng som jag har beställt, skönt att få det gjort så slipper man tänka på att man måste förbi och betala någon dag, nu är de gjort och nu ringer dom när dom får reda på något leveransdatum och så. Jag har även fått en del mejl ivägskickade och hoppas på positiv respons på dom, om inte så går inte världen under för det iofs men det hade varit väldigt skoj om dom kom tillbaka med ett positivt svar.

Vi blev av med internet i söndags eftermiddag bara sådär, jag dammsög och efter det så funkade inte vårat modem. Det är adaptern som har gått sönder men en ny är påväg, dock insåg jag idag att jag har en gammal router här hemma och även en adapter till den. Kollade så att det var samma anslutningstyp på de båda vilket det var så nu har vi internet igen men vi vill förståss fortfarande ha vårat nya modem. Synd att jag inte tänkte på det innan bara men nu har man insett hur stor del internet är av ens liv. Det är en sak om man är hos sina föräldrar eller så där man inte är så ofta, är man då utan internet så klarar man sig, men att vara hemma och inte ha internet är frustrerande. Bara det här med att kolla hur kallt det är ute blir helt plötsligt omöjligt för mig som inte har en egen termometer. Ännu värre är det när man har tråkigt, då sätter man sig vid datorn och startar internet som vanligt men inser rätt så snabbt att nä, det var ju inte där längre nä.

Lite mer om projektet oxå kanske, för er som inte orkar gå in på min projekt blogg och sen klicka er vidare till AK’s projektblogg där alla info finns. Vi fick som sagt välja på 3 ämnen, det första är att ta fram 100 spelkoncept och sen att ta de 20 bästa och skriva kort vad de handlar om, sen plockar man bort hälften och av de 10 som är kvar så gör man power point presentationer på. Därifrån sen så väljer man ut 5 stycken och gör lite research på dom och sedan utvecklar man 2-3 prototyper som man sedan kan speltesta lite enkelt och för att visa ideerna. Sen så väljer man en av dom och skriver ett designdokument på den då bästa ideen. Det är den jag har tänkt att välja och är väll oxå därför jag skriver en så utförlig instruktion på den.

I det andra ämnet så ska man sätta sig in i något valt ämne, antingen en genre eller en spelserie. Kan vara rätt så intressant oxå men just genrer har jag läst så mycket om iochmed att jag läst speltidningar sen barnsben typ så det känns som att det inte skulle ge mig så mycket.

I det 3 ämnet så ska man spela ett spel och undersöka det på djupet, kolla på design och tänkta designproblem dom kan ha stött på. Också en rätt intressant ide, att få undersöka ett spel på djupet, det är inte alltid man gör det men det som lockade mig på den var ju att AK tyckte att man skulle intervjua Lead Designern men då gäller det oxå att få tag på vederbörande vilket nog kan vara svårt.

Jag och Lisa firade förövrigt 8 månader igår, vi åt chili con carne och till efterrätt blev det fruktsallad med himmelsk hallonglass. Annars tog vi det nog rätt så lungt igår, kollade på Greys Anatomi o Top Model. Trevligt hade vi det iallefall.

Internet krångel

Sitter i skolan just nu, har information om vårat fördjupningsarbete om 40 min som förövrigt inte alls är vad jag hade förväntat mig att det skulle vara. Jag hade ju tänkt att vi skulle få välja relativt fritt om vad vi ville göra men istället får vi välja på 3 topics. Tyckte väll först att det var väldigt illa men tror det kan bli intressant och tror även att det kan fungera när man söker jobb på ett företag istället för ännu ett flashspel eller så.

Vi har förövrigt blivit av med internet hemma sen i söndags eftermiddag så är helt isolerad från omvärlden, men det är oxå en erfarenhet att leva utan det ett tag men änså länge har det gått rätt så bra. Förhoppningsvis så får vi hem en ny router/modem imorn eller senast på fredag så det är bara att stå ut de få dagarna. Man hinner göra en hel del annat dock när man inte spenderar en massa tid framför internet. Dock trycke man ofta på Firefox ikonen av gammal vana när man sitter vid datorn och möts av en felskärm.

Lisa flyttade in hos mig i lördags, vi hyrde en liten Nissan Note och körde skytteltrafik mellan min o hennes gamla lägenhet. Vi fick upp allt till min lägenhet på några timmar och har nu kommit iordning. Vi fick stuva om en del och jag fick ge upp många av mina speltidningar och ställa ner dom i källarn så att hon kunde få plats med lite av sina saker i hyllan bland annat. Det var nog allt tror jag för stunden.

Presentation and Exam

Time for presentation tomorrow and to show the world, or atleast the class, what we have been working on since mid december. Its gonna be nice and funny. We have high expectations on our game but we will let the judges decide tomorrow. One group said that they had barely started yesterday, it could be a psych out to make us feel secure over our project or else they actually have been lazy and havn’t done anything yet. Toworrow we’ll see which way it is. But it’s going to be an intresting day tomorrow, hopefully with an happy ending but who knows.

We have made some late changes today and gone thru the presentation and it feels good.  The first slide is to die for when shown on a projector.

Yesterday we had our exam in Game enginees, first thought was ”WTF! What is all this”, but then I calmed down and started to read thru the questions and in the end I answered on all questions and I really hope to get a good grade on it. But Johannes, our teacher said the exam would be quite simple last year but then it probably was for him and that is usually the case, it’s easy for the teacher and a hell for the students. 5 or 6 of my classmates turned in the exam as fast as it was possible which is after an our from the start. Done it myself a couple of times but that was a couple of years ago.

This saturday, Lisa is gonna move in with me in my appartment. We have rented a car, a little Nissan Note, from Statoil which we will use to move her stuff from her appartment to mine. We also plan to buy a bigger bed, we were at the store today and tried it and it felt so good. 2 weeks delivery time so end January would be when we would we get it.

I’m starting to get hungry now so I’m gonna end this and return tomorrow with the outcome of the presentations.

Ice crushing

I’ve been in Eskilstuna for a day and some hours now and I start to miss Skellefteå and my own apartment, its just not the same even if I’m home at my parents. I never lived in this house when I was young since they moved here 2 years ago when I was still living in Göteborg so I have no memories, no room or anything here. But it pretty nice seeing them again, last time was in the end of the summer before I went up north again so it’s a couple of months.

Today I have been crushing ice on our driveway, the snow that came last week or so have been compressed into a layer of ice and dad didn’t want it that way so I was out for over an hour and stabbing it with an spade and then showing it away with a rack. I found a special one in our garage that is made for our driveway thats filled with gravels. I used it to get all the iceflakes away and let the gravel stay. I’m gonna continue tomorrow I guess since I only took half the driveway.

I also packed up our old Xbox and plugged it in to a TV and started it. It have had problems with reading CDs but I put it up agains the wall so its nearly vertical now which is said to work good for the laser. So I plugged in one of those old, huge Xbox controllers and played some Galleon. Pretty nice but damn those controllers were big, I did prefer them before but today I’m not sure, I am used to smaller controllers like the Sixaxis or the 360 controller so the xbox controller just seems very big nowadays. But it feels pretty good in the hands, to bad I only packed down two games from home, Galleon and The Warriors, but I’m going to contact my brother and see if he still have Project Gotham Racing 2 and if he can take it with him.

Now on the evening I have been checking out CryEngine Sandbox, the Far Cry engine that we’ll have to do a level in for school. I found the manual for it and start to get a feeling of how things works in it. Still havn’t created anything productive, I have just been playing around with it to learn it but I’m making progress atleast.

I got a spotify invite a week ago and today I downloaded it and created a user and its a pretty sweet program. It’s nice when your infront of the computer and get access to all different music. The hard part is to come up with music you actually want to hear at the moment. At the moment I’m listening at Michael Jackson and his Invincible album from 2001. I have heard three songs now and I could tell which one is which if I would play them again on random, they pretty much sound the same all of them.

not sure what I’ll do the rest of the evening, maybe I’ll stay infront of the computer and doing stuff on it or else I’ll join dad infront of the tv. The future will tell! Smell ya later all.

I really wanna go skiing now, the weather the last couple of days have been crispy as when skiing in the swedish mountains, and I wish I could go down to the Alps and go snowboarding for a week or two, it would be amazing. Last time I was there was like two years ago when me, my brother and Thörner went to V’al Thorens, a huge skisystem containing three different skisystems but that have been linked togheter at the tops of the mountains.

It would be nice to rent a house or an apartment over New Year with some friends in Sälen or so, although its not that cheap during the new years weekend so it probably won’t become anything of it.

Today I have a Creative design lession with David from Northern Kingdom, it’s usually quite intresting so it will be fun. I also have to gather togheter some of my school works and sort them out and pick out stuff that I can send away to different companies for my thesis, its got to be the best stuff since they might go very much on what you actually send over but I’ll check somethings thru and see what I can come up with.

Also today I hope I’ll receive Prince of Persia and Isak’s Bioshock, have taken long enough now so I should have them by today. Shaun White as I received yesterday is getting better, its getting better while you playing it and it’s nice just sliding down the slopes. I have played the forth level now and its really nice. Takes place in Alaska and it starts of with a huge area of bare mountains where only the snow lays and then after a long time you get down to the treeline, it really feels like a long way to go and you don’t even see the trees in the beginning.

Yesterday I went down to Traversen f0r a shortie, I met Lisa on the way there so we went there togheter, I took a beer and then we went home but it was pretty nice with a nightly walk.

Yesterday Meteos Wars was released on XBLA and damn its funny and hectic. I would buy it if I wasn’t going home next week but I thinking of getting the DS version instead. I have had the DS version a couple of years ago and I liked it, but after I played it a whole summer I sold it but now I want it again. Atleast over the christmas holiday, then I can sell it again so I hope I can get my hands on the PAL version of the game.

Högskolepoäng

Har suttit och kollat vad som faktiskt ska ingå i våran kurs Spelmotorer som vi läser just nu. Orkar inte gå in på detalj men enligt kursplanen ska vi ha både föreläsningar och laborationer, vi ska lära oss om olika spelmotorer och utvecklingsmiljöer för olika plattformar och speltillämpningar.

Men det absolut roligaste är hur många poäng vi ska läsa. Varje ämne är 7.5 högskolepoäng (HP). Spelmotorer är uppdelade på följande sätt

• Tentamen: 4,5HP
• Laborationer: 3HP

Kollar man sen hur många timmar 1,5 HP är så motsvarar det 40 timmars arbete som man ska ha i veckan. Varje termin är 30HP och en läsperiod 15HP. För man över detta till våran kurs så ska tentan motsvara 120 timmars studier och vi ska ha laborationer i 80 timmar.

Kollar man verkligheten så har vi 1 timme i veckan med föreläsning, högst 1½ timme och sen 0(noll) timmar labbar. Visst, vi har en bok som vi kan läsa men enligt Ztans så tar det 30 minuter/kapitel och boken är inte så tjock så att den skulle kunna motsvara resteranded 19 timmar vi ska ha i veckan.

Så när vi går ut härifrån kommer vi kunna säga att vi har läst 1,5 HP Spelmotorer då det är ungefär vad skolan ger oss. Rätt så illa men så kanske det blir när linjen är nerlagt och ingen har något intresse. Det vi har fått lära oss hittils är mest tekniskt mumbojumbo som vi inte kan göra så mycket med. Vi vill ju skapa saker och det hade varit kanon om vi hade fått en grundkurs i olika spelmotorer som typ Sandbox, Unreal Engine, Hammer osv så att vi kan skapa antingen moddar eller använda oss av dom för att visa ideer men istället får vi ingenting.

Det kan fortfarande hända att vi kommer få pilla med 1 spelmotor, vi har 2 lektioner kvar, en idag o en nästa vecka. Men jag tror inte att det kommer att hända om vi inte ligger på dom. Det här kanske är lite stoft till aftonbladet….

About seeing the truth about people.

It have taken a bit over a year but now my class starts to branch out and get separeted. We have different groups in the class now adays that wasn’t there earlier. Ther previous year have been like I could work with nearly anyone, atleast while we still were at 2007, but today there is only a few people in my class that I actually could think working with. Some people in the class are not as serios and rather play games then actually doing something good, sure games is a important thing for a game designer but there should be more then 1-2 games.

From January to June this year I worked in different groups and there is only one of them I think I would work with today, the rest I can’t stand to work with on a more serious work. If there is a small excercise during a lesson there are no problems but not on a large work.

Those I like to work with is those I work with today in the Iphone project, Isak & Johan. They are serious and they are easy to work with. I think we make a great team and complement each others pretty good and they are not afraid of doing stuff today instead of pushing it forth until the last day before hand in. Cheers to you guys!

Today I been searching for more companies where I can write my thesis in Game design and after school I’m going to finish of my personal letter and translate it to english as well. Now I got to fix some food so I don’t go to school hungry.

I don’t get it…

I was calling a guy at a company today to talk to him about my thesis in Game design, but he had left the building for the day. The same thing happened earlier this week when I tried to call him. Then he was on vacation and was coming back today. Why don’t people wanna talk to me for? And yes, it have happend before this week to, like when I was calling a large game development company here in Sweden and of all weeks, the person responsible for HR was on vacation. Always the same thing, but tomorrow I going to try again and hopefully his at his office then.

Today we had our third meeting for our Iphone project, I came up with some stuff yesterday on my way down to Lisa that I wrote down in one of my notebooks and presented them today for the group. They helped shape the game in a singel direction and also made it work a bit better I think.

This week I’ve ordered three new games as well, although only two are for me, Shaun Whites Snowboarding (PS3) and the new Prince of Persia (Xbox 360). The third game is Bioshock and it is for Isak who was too lazy to create his own membership on Play.com but it doesn’t matter.

I have sent a lot of mail the latest week to all different people, many of them are teachers at my University. It’s been mail like ”Can you upload the presentations to Fronter?” and ”We are double booked this thursday” and the funny thing is that what I mail people about actually happens after a day or two. The presentations from Game enginees came up on Fronter the same evening I think, we got our schedule remade since we were double booked for tomorrow when Swedish Game Awards and Microsofts will be at school to talk to us. I also mailed our Blender teacher to ask when he is done with the correcting and commenting for the labs. Today I got a mail that was filled with comments about my Blender lab and some other stuff. To sum it up, I make things happen for my class =P

Radarpar

… kommer jag till om ett tag men först lite annat.

Tråkigt väder här i Skellefteå idag, ligger runt 0 grader men det är iallefall snö ute iallefall vilket är skönt. Igår var det fest på Älvsbacka, hade länge planer på att inte gå dit men gick dit tillslut när klockan närmade sig 11. Det var rätt så trevligt, satt mest och snackade med Lisa och hennes kompisar från Linköping och sen Amir förståss.

Idag o även resten av helgen har jag spelat mycket Fable 2, är snart klar med min andra genomspelning och spelet är fortfarande intressant och bra. Man kan ju annars tappa motivationen under sin andra genomspelning men inte här, kommer troligen att spela klart det rätt så snart och sen tror jag att nya Prince of Persia släpps i slutet av nästa vecka så då blir det till att spela det istället. Något som jag är lite besviken på i Fable 2 är dock storleken på Bowerstone, den storstad där spelet till viss del utspelar sig. Den är indelad i 2 stadsdelar och sen närliggande kyrkogård och slott. Jag trodde att staden skulle vara rätt så stor men tji fick jag men det påverkar inte spelet direkt.

Sitter just nu o kollar på Erik och Mackan på TV6, ännu en skön duo på TV. Erik o Mackan e inne på sin andra säsong, nu ska dom bli snygga o smärta och gör en massa roliga och knäppa experiment. Andra dunderduosar på svensk TV är Jens och Sebastian som höll i Stor i Japan tidigare i höstas, det var riktigt kul och intressant, speciellt eftersom jag gillar Japan. Fredrik o Filip har på måndag sitt Boston Tea Party som oxå är ett favoritprogram, svensk teve är inte helt värdelöst även om program som Idol, Stjärnor på Is och liknande inte är några höjdare.

Såg på Shaun of the Dead nyss oxå, innan Erik o Mackan, och skit vad jag gillar Simon Pegg. Filmen är klockren med massa småsaker som gör filmen så himla skön. Typ som när det står en person i parken när Shaun(Pegg) köper blommor och försöker fånga fåglar att äta men det är typ ingen annan än han som ser det. Andra roligheter är när han står och visar teveapparater för några kunder i butiken där han jobbar och dom enbart visar nyheter på alla kanaler och man ser ett par militärbilar på sändingen för att sen i nästa scen se dom åka förbi utanför butiken, det är sånnahär småsaker som gör filmen rolig men som oxå går att missa om man inte tänker på dom. Har en kompis som missade alla sådana och inte förstog varför vi satt och skrattade hela tiden för några år sedan. Pegg och Frost har även medverkat i Hot Fuzz och Run Fatboy Run bland annat men tycker nog att Shaun of the Dead är bäst. Tror att Shaun of the Dead även bygger vidare på en gammal tv-serie som Pegg var med i, har försökt att kolla på den men har aldrig orkat kolla klart på en hel säsong då den inte var lika bra som filmen.

Kommande vecka har vi lektion på senare delen av veckan, ännu lite oklart när då David från Northern Kingdom inte kan ha den planerade lektionen imorn utan det blir först på torsdag eller fredag. Så tills dess ska jag jobba på projektet, ska fixa de delar jag har åtagit mig vilket är mestadels grafiska saker till presentationen. Tror även att jag kommer få hem min bok kommande vecka som jag beställde i torsdags eller onsdags. Ska även försöka fixa med xjobb och liknande så det finns saker att göra, ska bara få tummen ur och göra dom. Ska även ta o gymma och försöka ta mig till innebandyn som jag inte har varit på än.

I fredags så var det en liten film o spelkväll hos mig, vi blev bara 4 stycken, jag, Walter och tvillingarna. Vi spelade lite spel och kollade på Tron och blev då väldigt sugen på spelet Tron 2.0, hittar det bara i en butik på nätet för 189 riksdaler. Funderar på om det är värt det, finns ju andra spel jag vill ha just nu men det var kanske mest tanken att spela under jullovet, men vi får se.

Nu ska jag antingen spela lite Fable 2 med Lisa eller fila lite på mitt personliga brev. O ja, jag har en flickvän som spelar spel, hon e bäst.
