Förändring

september 16, 2009 · 1 kommentar

New computer or not

september 1, 2009 · Kommentera

I talked to the Twins yesterday about buying and playing Champions Online together this weekend as I hoped my computer would be able to run the game somewhat functional. During the conversation I looked up the minimum requirements and released that my computer probably matched those which isn’t a good sign since it usually isn’t a pleasant ride when running on minimum requirements.

I was looking at new computer parts last Sunday with the price for a package with most of the necessary stuff being 4000 kr, but then I could need a new power supply as well and probably something more which makes the price go over 5000 kr and here somewhere I realize that the autumn for a console gamer is rather good as it is and that a MMO game isn’t what I need as there is a lot of other games I want to play. If I don’t buy the computer parts I could put that money on games instead which is great so no new computer at the moment. I might buy one when I have a steady income instead, but as for now I don’t know how much I’ll get to work.

In other news I bought The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition a couple of days ago which is a remake of the first Monkey Island game. It’s pretty good but they should have gone with the style of Monkey Island 3 instead of making a butt ugly character but thankfully it is still playable. The first video shows both the original Secret of Monkey Island game and the newly released Special Edition

The next video is from the third game, The Curse of Monkey Island which I wished they would have looked at when creating the Special Edition.

I also ordered the new Batman game after being hyped when I watched the review at Gametrailers, I also played the demo on the 360 and found it really good as I found the perfect way of playing it, sneaking around and taking out enemies on at a time. A gameplay video from Batman Arkham Asylum

Wet impressions

augusti 21, 2009 · Kommentera

Yesterday was a good day for Playstation 3 owners, Sony released three demos on the Swedish Playstation Store where I found one game I have heard of but not much more than that, no hype or anything.  It’s called Wet and lets you control Rubi, a gun slinging babe who makes all actions look cool.

Wet is a third person action game with very much likeness to John Woo’s Stranglehold that was released a year or two back. I only played the demo of it but that game and Wet is about jumping, sliding and running while killing people. The game uses an auto aim so when jumping you’ll get a red circle on one enemy which you automatically fires at when you pull the trigger, but you can also aim at another one and take down two at the same time. At certain points in the game you enter Rubi vision which turns the game into a black and red stylized game where you fire in ultra rapid.

What makes Wet special in my eyes is that it they have a special filter over the screen that makes the game look grainy, as an old movie. That together with the music and feeling makes the game feel like a Tarantino movie, only it’s playable.

I’m not sure whether I’m going to buy the game at release but either I buy it to support a good product that might not get as much attention as many other titles will receive or I buy it later on when it can be found for less money. We’ll see what happens but it sure is a good looking and interesting game they created.

I’ll post a link to Wet’s homepage which contains information, pictures, movies and also the music from the game. It really gets the feeling of the game there. Check it out here.

RFG – The end of a Commander

augusti 20, 2009 · Kommentera

2120 August 20, Badlands, Mars

In the last couple of days we have built up two new bases, one in Oasis and another one in the mountains to the east in Badlands. The two bases are bigger than the ones we have had before but the guerilla is starting to grow now with many people joining us so we need large bases. I have helped out at the base but I have also fixed some other things in the sectors like collecting EDF vehicles for Sam, destroying buildings and help guerilla members raiding some important EDF buildings.

Last night we gathered a small group of guerilla members to kidnap a high rank Commander of EDF who said to have information on how to navigate in the Free Fire Zone. We met up close to the border of Dust where I picked them up and we drove to one of the EDF bases in the center of Badlands. We drove in and met a convoy of EDF vehicles so we jumped out of the car and started to shoot around us, killing the EDF soldiers that were guarding the Commanders vehicle. I used the Arc Welder which I prefer to use when there is a lot of guards that has to be taken care off.

When all soldiers were dead, I overheard on one of their radios that more troops where on the way so I told the rest of the party to get in into the Commanders vehicle before the other guards arrive. I mounted the gun on the roof while Jake took the wheel and drove away. The commander were wrestled down and put in handcuffs to be interrogated about the Free Fire zone.

When we drove away from the small EDF base we met up with a handful of EDF vehicles that passed us by but soon realized what have happened and started to turn around. I pointed the mounted gun towards them and started to fire and saw how some of the vehicles exploded. I looked around and saw several new vehicles coming up against us as well as one of EDF’s fighter aircrafts who controls the sky. I grabbed the gun harder, swung it around towards the aircraft and bombarded it, it soon went down and I took care of the vehicles while Jake made everything he could to avoid the vehicles. As we drove around the interrogation went forward with the Commander spilling the beans on how to navigate the Free Fire zone.

When we have received all the information we wanted we drove into the desert and went for the Mudhole in the south. It’s an old mining site where a crazy old man is sitting around thinking it his birthday every day. When we reached the hole all of us from the guerilla abandoned the vehicle letting it roll down into the hole with the Commander still in it. We have received a lot of information and also how to advance in the future so we went back to the base to celebrate a small but important victory but the EDF is still present in the Badlands and we still have to drive them out from here.

Red Faction Guerrilla impressions

augusti 18, 2009 · Kommentera

I have now played Red Faction Guerrilla for a bit over eleven hours and I have liberated two out of five or six sectors and have explored two others so I might be half way into the game right now. I am not hurrying at all but instead taking my time to explore Mars, doing side missions and getting hunted by EDF soldiers.

Mars is a nice and atmospheric place with its mostly red surface but it doesn’t get tedious but instead you can tell each Sector from each other by the look of them. The visuals are accompanied by a soundtrack full of feeling that fits the barren landscapes of Mars perfect like when you drive over the red dunes in the sunset going back to your base.

Red Faction Guerrilla won’t win any prices for a deep and immersive story but its there and most missions fit the story as they are about helping the people in one way or another. The story continues at certain points when videos that are not done in the game engine are played up, the missions are presented with short video clips in a media player with the voice from the commander or whoever present the game. They are usually informative and rather short showing/telling what you should do and where you should do it.

The side missions that lowers the EDF influence comes in different actions such as raiding EDF bases, protecting buildings from EDF and rescuing civilians that have been captured. Other types of side missions involves picking up and delivering vehicles, demolish buildings and destroying or capture EDF convoys. They are free to do whenever you want to but they raise your influence over the peoples in the sector and the higher your influence is the more help you’ll get from civilians.

The collection of weapons you can use grows along with the playtime with new weapons being stolen from EDF’s or bought from Samanya, the female engineer who have a central role in the DLC that was released a week ago or so. The weapons range from a simple pistol to a singularity bomb creating a black hole that sucks all lose parts of the environments in and also tears down the surroundings. Other useful weapons are the standard rocked launcher that can be upgraded to fire several rockets at the same time using a similar mechanics as Unreal Tournaments ditto. There is also a nano rifle that releases a swarm of nano machines eating up anything that it can, except the ground.

Red Faction Guerrilla is the third game in the series taking place 50 years or so after the first game. What was outstanding in the first two games was that you could destroy the environment such as the walls in a mine and build tunnels into the unknown. This feature is gone in Guerrilla and now you can only destroy buildings and vehicles pretty much but that is pretty much enough since the destruction is permanent.

There are a few exceptions to that though, some missions that takes place in areas that you could have destroyed earlier resets the buildings and you have to start over destroying it all again, although if some of them are key buildings that you have destroyed or EDF property they get build up but won’t get back its EDF status.

So far I like the game, it’s fun and varied and sometime a bit hard but I return to the game again and again. The feeling of being hunted through the desert with the sun setting while you try to control your vehicle and avoiding both EDF vehicles and rocks is nice, I haven’t felt this into a game for a long time and I really want to help the people of Mars. It’s not mindless killing or doing mission after mission to see the credits in the end this time, I try to take the game to the “next” level, getting a deeper experience of it and for that I also created the story posts telling parts of the game from the main characters point of view.

RFG – Liberation of Dust Sector

augusti 13, 2009 · Kommentera

2120 August 13, Dust Sector, Mars

Today, EDF withdrew their forces from Dust Sector although they did it by bombarding the city of Dust. We have successfully lowered the influence of EDF in the sector with several critical blows to some of their most important buildings and facilities.

I was close when the bombardment started and I soon received a phone call from the Commander, he asked me if I was in the vicinity of Dust City and if I could go in there and set some people free and grab some files on several computers. I decided to help out and jumped into the closest car and went over the hill to the largest part of Dust City. It’s divided into two parts, on upper and one lower part and I had to help out two people at the upper one as well as grab a pair of documents from a suitcase in one of the houses, additionally on the lower part I had to help two clerks from their stores.

When I reached the lower part I heard the horrible screams of Marauders coming my way, I looked around and saw them coming from the other side of the road so I decided that there was still time to help out one of the clerks so I ran into the store and told the clerk to run away from this area and to one of our bases. As I came out the Marauders had advanced to the house so I shocked them with my Arc Welder and finished them both of with a swing from my sledgehammer. I jumped into the car again and drove to the next store where I jumped out, waved my sledgehammer on a couple of Marauders and ran inside. As I spoke to the clerk in the second store the phone rang and I received a message from the Commander telling me that there are two persons locked up in the EDF base that needs to be evacuated as well.

I hurried out to my vehicle and drove away to the next part of the city where the two persons were locked up. On the way over I drove past a Marauder vehicle full with Marauders armed to their fullest. I drove past them as and continued up the road to the base. Usually there is a lot of EDF activity here with pulse guns pointed to the road but this time there were only abandoned vehicles along with the bombardments. I drove up the hill past all road blocks and came to two buildings, two storeys high.

I parked my car at the second building, ran up a floor where I found one person whom I saved and ran out again and to the next building and up to its second floor. I didn’t found anyone here so I ran down to the ground floor where I found the last person whom I helped out and gave her the instructions on how to get to safety. On my way down from the base I receive further instructions that there is a couple of files I need to get from the part of Dust City that is the furthers away from its central building.

When I reached the last place I had to find three computers so I started with checking the building closest to me where I rather fast found a computer terminal at which I extracted the files needed. On the way to the next house I ran into a group of Marauders that I shocked with the Arc Welder and finished them off with a Remote Charge placed in their vicinity. I ran up a stair at the next house finding the terminal I was looking for. I had some problem with the access to it as I apparently did not have all the permissions I needed to do what I wanted so I used another name when I logged in that I snapped up when I was talking to Sam once. I extracted the files, logged out from the terminal and went outside to get to my car. On the way to the car I saw some Marauders coming my way so I killed them and when I was a few meters from my car a bomb hit it and it exploded. With more Marauders incoming I fired blindly behind me while running for the closest vehicle I could find. I jumped into the vehicle and floored the throttle to avoid the bombardments. On the way I saw how the EDF have laid waste to Dust City and there was dead people lying around as well as burned out vehicles standing on the road. I drove through and out from the city zone and drove towards the base and I thought that it was a high price to pay for freedom but when the bombardments ended the EDF won’t be causing anymore problem for the city in Dust.

The future of gaming or I told you so!

augusti 13, 2009 · Kommentera

I wrote earlier this year in my specialization project that I thought downloadable games would become big since it lowers the development costs and doesn’t require as much people. Yesterday Grin handed in an application for going bankruptcy as their game might not have sold as much as they should have done. This year they released three titles; Bionic Commando, Terminator Salvation and Wanted Weapon of Fate. Now though, some people from Grin have opened up a new studio called Outbreak Studio and are going to focus on downloadable games for Xbox 360s Xbox Live Marketplace, Playstation Network Store and Wiiware on Nintendo Wii, they are also going to develop games for the Iphone or at least that what they told the world at the moment.

Microsoft focus a lot of energy on these type of games and have under the summer released several new games under an ad called Summer of Arcade, the last title to be released is Shadow Complex next week, earlier than that they have released Marvel vs. Capcom, Trails HD, Turtles in Time Re-shelled and ‘Splosion Man. Games that have a great play value and that haven’t cost a massive amount of money to develop.

The pricing of downloadable games are lower than full production games and for example Trails HD that was released this week costs 1200 MS Points which is 120-130 SEK which is a good price for a good game. I played it a bit yesterday and it seem to hold a lot of gameplay for that amount of money as there is a dozen mini games that seemed to be fun.

Shadow Complex that will be released next week is apparently a very good game according to those who have played it. It is a 2D game in 3D similar to Castlevania and Metroid. It is backed up with Unreal Engine 3 and Chair, the developers, has had Epic Games as support during the development. It probably ends with more gameplay hours than some full price games and have a higher production value than some games but it is still released for a downloadable service and costs two pizzas pretty much.

Microsoft have also released their Indie game folder on Xbox Live Marketplace where indie developer can release their own games and make some money out of them, the only requirement is that they should be developed in XNA I believe but it’s a great way to show the world what you can do when going in school or such. I didn’t have that luxury at my school although.

I have mentioned a lot of Microsoft and their games in this post but Sony have a lot of downloadable games as well with the latest hit probably being Fat Princess and Nintendo have some interesting games up on Wiiware as well, I haven’t bought anyone of them though. But I just wanted to say that I was right in January when I wrote that I thought downloadable games would become bigger and something to take serious and that I chose a ‘genre’ that was active or alive.

RFG – Marauders

augusti 12, 2009 · Kommentera

2120 August 11, Dust Sector – Mars

Earlier today I received a phone call from the commander who asked me if I could recover one of our weapon boxes that the Marauders recently stole from us outside one of our old abandoned houses.

We have GPS markers on all the boxes so I tracked the stolen one by following its GPS signal. I followed the signal from eastern Dust and into the Badlands where the Marauders hunt. After trying to catch up with the GPS signal I saw an odd looking vehicle that the signal came from.  I kept following the vehicle through the desert at a safe distance when suddenly a purple portal opens up in the mountain which the Marauder went through. I could not let them get away with the weapon box so I went after through the portal.

On the other side of the portal a similar desert appeared and I saw a dust cloud appear to the southeast. I thought that it must be the vehicle so I went after it. After a bit I see the vehicle standing at a narrow path in between the mountains, I exit my own vehicle and called up the commander keeping him on line while I explore the mountain path. He told me to keep an eye out for an ambush so I picked up my assault rifle and put against my shoulder. I continued down the path until I saw an old abandoned house which looks to be in ruins. The commander informed me that the building infront of me is part of a larger complex that used to be the headquarters of Ultor Corporation many years ago.

I walked through the first building and continued up to the right where the tracks went. I followed the tracks to the next building and entered a large complex, it looked like a entrance hall of some sort. The tracks continued straight through but something inside me told me to go to the left, up the stairs and out. I saw an house laying under me so I climbed down and entered it. When I got inside I heard voices, I couldn’t see anyone so I shouted to see if anyone answered but no one did. I continued to explore the house to find the source for the voices as I came upon a large machine holding a glowing sphere of some sort. I asked the commander what it was but he said he did not know and asked if I could bring it back to the base.

I took a step closer to it and nothing happened so I grabbed it and put it in my bag. I asked the Commander how I should get back and he told me that Sam was waiting for me somewhere outside the structure. I started to walk back as the Commander told me to hurry on as he could see EDF movement on its way to my location. I started to run the same way back and half way out of the second house I meet up with the EDF soldiers that started to fire upon me.

I went for cover and picked up my assault rifle, I fired blindly over the cover in hope of hitting someone. When I reloaded my rifle I heard the EDF soldiers screaming something of being attacked from behind so I check out from my cover and see how the soldiers get ambushed by the Marauders. I ceased the opportunity to flee and ran out of the building and came out in the open desert again. I looked around and saw Marauders fighting EDF soldiers everywhere so I entered one of the Marauders vehicles and escaped the fight. The Commander gave me the coordinates to Sam as I went over a bunch of soldiers, I checked the map and saw that the meet up point where over at the next open field. I accelerated and tried to avoid a couple of Marauders that was coming my way which failed and I mangled them. I then saw Sam and a couple of people from the Guerilla standing in the distance. I stopped at them and gave Sam the Orb, talked a bit and we then decided to go back to the base as we saw several EDF troops coming closer.

It was an exciting day and the first visit to the Badlands and I ended up alive which sure is a success. Until next time, take care on Mars and watch out for Marauders.

RFG – My first mission

augusti 5, 2009 · Kommentera

After killing the last EDF soldier outside my brother’s house, I watched him lying there; he seemed to be a normal person who only followed orders from the corporation, doing what he was told to do. I look around me at the miners who were firing against the soldiers and I see a familiar face that comes towards me. I remember seeing him earlier today, here at Dan’s house. He is the Commander of Red Faction and asks me if I’m okay, I tell him I am but that the EDF soldiers thought I were a member of Red Faction and the Commander says to me “You are now!”.

We jump into a car that takes us to the Red Faction base and on the way over I get a brief over the real situation on Mars, how the Earth Defence Force was sent in 50 years ago to help Red Faction to take down the Corporation and how EDF over time took the role as the new corporation, ruling the people with fear, oppression and terror.

Back at the base I meet up with Samanya who tells me that she have worked with my brother, how good he was and how much they really could need my help now. I walk around the camp to see what it has to offer. To the left there is a metal shed that works as a hideout for Red Faction members. It’s not very big but it contains workbenches, tools and some shelves. I walk out of the hideout and walk north where I see a garage to the left with a large red dusty vehicle in it. To the right is the way down to one of the larger roads that connects the different sites here in Parker Sector.

When I’m standing at the garage I get a call from the Commander who asks me if I can go to the old Red Faction base and destroy all the evidence of Red Faction being there. I check a map and I see that the old base is located to the north, on the other side of Parker Sector so I ask a mechanic if I can use the vehicle that is standing in the garage. I get a grumpy approval so I jump in into the vehicle and start the engine.

I drive down to the large road, turn left and then continue north towards the old base. I pass by a lot of armed guards on the way and even thou Parker sector is one of few sectors where you can mine freely the miners still seems afraid of the EDF guards.

As I am closing in on the old base, I stop the car to check out the site from a distance to spot any danger but the base looks all deserted so I continue up to the lower level of it and park my vehicle at the garage with it fronts towards the road for a fast escape if the EDF would come by. I walk up the stairs to the upper level and pick up my sledgehammer and my explosives. I plant some explosives inside the house; I crush a wall with my sledgehammer and walk out again to set off the explosives. The house explodes from the inside and the walls falls in one after the other. After a short while only thing left is a cloud of red dust and that’s when I hear vehicles coming up the driveway to the garage. I turn around and see two EDF vehicles stop at my perfectly parked vehicle and out comes several EDF guards. I hide behind a stone wall, throw away an explosive towards the vehicles and another at the stair which a couple of the guards seem to go towards. I’m waiting for the right moment to set off the explosives.

The explosives go off, their vehicles as well as mine fly into the air and the stair and part of the garage breaks into the pieces. I see the opportunity to escape and run towards the wall that is close to the road, I jump over and hijack the first vehicle that comes by which turned out to be a large carrier carrying ore from the mines and miners. I jump in and drive past the driveway to the garage taking the same way back as I came but just as I pass the driveway a third vehicle arrives looking at me but just pass by and goes up to the garage. I drive towards the hide out in a hurry incase the EDF are after me but I make it back safe. I walk up to the safe house when I get another call…

RFG – A new Home

augusti 3, 2009 · Kommentera

I’m going to try something new here, something I have wanted to do from the time I played World of Warcraft many years ago. I want to retell a story of a game, in this case the recently released Red Faction Guerilla from Volition Inc. I received the game today and will try to retell parts of the story and the missions in the game in an “in character” perspective, although I won’t cover all missions but we’ll see where this ends up and for how long I keep it going. I hope this will trigger my creative vien aswell and get going on the writing of other stuff aswell. Below is the first part of many (hopefully) and the beginning of the game and story. Obviously the texts will contain some spoilers of missions and characters.

My name is Alec Mason and I have just landed on Mars looking for another job to do. Previously I have worked at different places on Earth, never stayed long at any place but some time ago my brother Dan asked me to come to Mars and work for Earth Defense Force.

On arrival I had to go through a lot of security passages and was instructed to report to the Parker Sector. On the outside of the spaceport my brother was waiting for me. We jumped into his car and drove off to his house, on the way we were close to crash with EDF’s vehicles that seemed to rush to the spaceport that we just left. We drove through Mars red environments and I looked around seeing a lot of armed EDF guards. Asked Dan why and he said that after they liberated Mars 50 years ago from Ultor Corporation they have turned and are today what Ultor was then, an evil corporation that suppress its people and that does anything for power and money.

When reaching Dan’s house a vehicle turns up outside and Dan tell me to stay inside while he meet up with the vehicle outside. I look out through the door and I see two persons that talk to my brother, I can’t hear exactly what they say but something about that they were after Dan.

When Dan came back inside we picked up some explosives and drove off to collect some salvage from an abandoned research facility. When we arrive at the facility an aircraft from EDF shows up in the air flying past us, Dan ask me to go down to the facility and destroy it in search for salvage while he keeps an eye out for the aircraft.

When I returned to Dan the aircraft comes back and accuse Dan to be a part of Red Faction, the old guerilla that started the liberation of Mars the last time. Dan tells me to run but I’m paralyzed by the situation and the second later the aircraft opens fire against Dan, killing him in front of my eyes. I scream and run towards him as he lays on the ground, dead, lifeless. I went back to Dan’s house but when I arrive there, there was a squad from EDF there looking for me. They accused me for being a member of Red Faction but I told them I just arrived at Mars and that there is no possibility that I can be that already. They still wanted to arrest me but then I heard guns being fired and I see one of the EDF soldiers fall over dead. I look around and see a mining worker standing at a hill some way from the house shooting at the EDF squad. A bit later I see other workers doing the same thing and I see how the EDF squad gets smaller and smaller. In the end only one soldier from EDF is left and he is hiding behind a car, I see a hammer and on pure instinct I pick it up and run towards the soldier swinging it at him, killing him instantly…

My name is Alec Mason and I have just landed on Mars looking for another job to do. Previously I have worked at different places on Earth, never stayed long at any place but some time ago my brother Dan asked me to come to Mars and work for Earth Defence Force.
